Many of us have heard about the shooting in Mahnomen MN last week. Two men were involved in the standoff that lead to the shooting of Deputy Christopher Dewey. Last week Dewey was in critical condition, which is expected when you are shot in the stomach and head. One of the men, Thomas Lee Fairbanks is accused of shooting Christopher Dewey twice and is facing first- and second-degree attempted murder charges. Both Fairbanks and Daniel Fernier, will appear in court on Thursday the 26th.
This week Dewey’s wife spoke to the public for the first time. Emily Dewey, 24, was listening to the scanner when her husband Christopher Dewey, 26, was shot in the abdomen and head just after 7 a.m. last Wednesday in Mahnomen, Minn.
A few days ago Christopher Dewey had surgery on his brain and abdomen. He is now in “satisfactory condition.” His wife claims he has been very talkative and even cracking jokes and goofing around. If you would like to check on Dewey’s status, check out the Caring Bridge website that is part of Meritcare.
I chose to write about this story this week because I know Christopher Dewey’s brain surgeon personally. Chad Justesen operated on me in the summer of 2007 after a spinal cord injury. After over 7 hours in the operating room, he put my shattered vertebrae back together. I was paralyzed from the chest down, and had no control of my arms, and was expected to never walk again. After his surgery, I was up and walking (not well, but walking) within two weeks. Today, I am almost back to normal.
He is an amazing neurosurgeon, and person, and this story hit close to home. I am glad that Dr. Justesen was able to save Christopher Dewey’s life, just like he saved mine in so many ways. I am also happy for the Dewey family. I hope that Deputy Dewey continues to recover and he and his family are in my prayers!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing such a personal story. It's is not the easiet thing to do when it hits so close to home. Wow--though I heard about this story when I was working. Immediately phoned my husband who is on the state patrol in N.D. not Minn. and panicked asking him if this could happen to him and whatnot. Which it could. It so scary to think of things that haven't happened yet, but could. I am very happy to hear this guy is pulling through after the shooting. I am interested in seeing how this trial will happen against the accused. They're so young the officer and wife. My heart goes out to them.
I heard that story too, and I am just glad to hear that he is recovering. It sounds like he has a great doctor working with him. I think it's amazing how well you recovered, and I wish the same for him. It's kinda crazy to think that these shooting occured so close to here. I hardly hear about tragic shootings around this area, but maybe that's because I don't watch the news as much as I could.
ReplyDeleteI heard about this story on the news and was shocked to hear how well he is doing so quickly. It sounds like he has a lot of support, which is very wonderful to hear. It is amazing what surgeons can do. Thank God they are amazing and saves lives! Dr. Justesen is a wonderful surgeon, he also helped on an operation of my my grandma's.
ReplyDeleteI think we’ve all be following this story for a variety of reasons. The tragedy yet miracle that is taking place through the media is something that catches our interest. Everyone who talks about it is wowing over the miracle. Those of us who have family in service both here and abroad are cheering for that miracle because if it ever happens to our loved one, we want that miracle too.
ReplyDeleteI’m so proud you shared your miracle with your class. “Neuro” descripts a field I’ve learned much more about than I wish I had to. Neuropsychology is a wonderful field I knew nothing about until my daughter’s horse accident. It has brought her back to us.
Wow. That is a very touching story. I am very happy that you are doing se well, and could not imagine going through that.
ReplyDeleteI think that your topic this week is very important because many people do not give any credit to surgeons. They are expected to do their work and then, once the patient is gone, people no longer recognize them.
Today's age, when technology is becoming more advance than ever. Therefore, this kind of surgery is one that we will be hearing more about. I think that since you have experienced this first-hand, that your outlook on it is one that really connects with the readers.
This kind of story is encouraging to read. It's good to hear how far your situation has improved. Though life seems more complicated today, we should be thankful for all the technological advances that have happened to make these stories possible. We should also be thankful for the law enforcement that put their lives on the line and the medical personnel who are willing to do as much as they can to keep our lives going.
